Trade or Retail Paint?
It comes as a surprise to a lot of customers that there is actually a difference between retail quality paint and trade quality paint. In fact, you will find most of the large DIY chains only stock retail paint, and a lot of customers do not even realise that there is such a thing as trade paint and assume that we in the trade just get a discount.
Trade paint quality
Trade paint is actually of a much higher quality than retail paint and it will go a lot further when covering a wall but it will also need fewer coats to produce a high-quality finish. Because trade paint uses a different pigment and has a different formulation it offers much greater coverage and a better overall finish than retail DIY paint.
There is a reason that professional painters and decorators use trade paint and it isn’t because we save money buying it. The quality of trade paint means that it costs more than retail paint but because painters and decorators buy larger sizes like 10 litres so they can get a better price. A trusted painter and decorator would not use retail DIY paint as the quality of finish can’t be guaranteed in comparison to trade paint.
In the trade, there is no such thing as bathroom paint, kitchen paint or one coat paint. These paints are aimed at the high street and don’t really deliver on their claims. If you want a professional finish then you need professional paint which is exactly what trade paint is.

Is painting and decorating good exercise
When you are painting you are almost constantly on the move and this of course burns calories. Certainly when you are using a roller it is quite physically demanding .
Is painting and decorating a dying trade
Never say never but due to the accuracy required and some of the awkward places that you have to reach to get the job done it is unlikely that anything automates will be able to replace you for the foreseeable future.
How much does painting and decorating earn you
How much you can earn can vary considerably. Recent labour market information says you can earn on average between £15,000 and £30,000 a year as a painter and decorator in the UK.
